Spatio-temporal variability of Red Sea planktonic bacteria

​Marine ecosystems located at tropical latitudes are typically less variable seasonally than temperate or polar waters. Although they do change temporally this source of variability remains poorly explored in the Red Sea. Similarly, large gaps in our knowledge about spatial (horizontal and vertical) variations of Red Sea planktonic microbes persist. This large project addresses different scales of variability in the abundance, distribution and activity of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria (including archaea in deep waters). With regard to time, diel, weekly and seasonal changes are being assessed within this project. Spatial studies go from short inshore-offshore transects to long latitudinal gradients along the N-S axis, as well as considering differences with depth in a strongly stratified water column.
