Response of Red Sea cyanobacteria to temperature

Details

Cyanobacteria belonging to the genera Prochlorococcusand Synechococcusare the most abundant photosynthetic organisms in the world, responsible for a major share of oceanic primary production, particularly at low latitudes. In this project we are applying the metabolic ecology framework to Red Sea cyanobacteria, both in cultures and in natural assemblages, which are kept at different temperatures in the lab. Among other variables we are measuring growth rate, cell size and gene expression with the ultimate goal of predicting the future response of natural communities to elevated temperatures.
